Not Italian or FrenchJun 11, 2012
When I bought these mushrooms before, they were clearly labled "from Italy". This time, the origin is not mentioned on the bag, and when I checked their website, I see they've written a bunch of malarky about how porcinis'taste the same wherever they're from, even from North America or China. That is just not true. Porcini from Europe taste better: the terroir changes the mushroom's flavor considerably, just as it changes the flavor of grapes made into wine. Since JR Mushrooms refuses to reveal their country of origin, I must assume they are selling cheaper, possibly contaminated mushrooms from China in order to make a bigger profit. Beware! Buy another brand.

Knock your socks offDec 27, 2007

Even if you think you know Italian dry mushrooms -- order these and find out how wrong you were. Unbelievably beautiful, deeply fragrant, terrific huge intact slices. Flip all the cards over: these completely redefine the category. Not just for sauces: soak a few to garnish your steak. Make a knockout appetizer with these porcini, some stock and a shot of marsala. To top it all: the price is reasonable. Bravo!

Wonderful mushroomsFeb 07, 2010
I have purchased many porcini mushrooms in grocery and gourmet stores. These were the best quality (flavor and shape). The price was excellent as well. I added some to a fresh mushroom soup I made and got an incredible depth of flavor. Have also used them in braised beef dishes.

Great value, great flavorMay 21, 2010
I've purchased 1# bags of dried porcini previously from a very expensive gourmet food purveyor in NYC. I tried this product - the price was a bit lower, but the shipping was MUCH lower. The dried porcini are as good, if not better than from the expensive place. They arrived promptly and were packaged well. I immediately put about a third of them into an airtight glass jar on my counter. Packaged the rest up in a doubled freezer bag and put them in the freezer. They keep well for over a year. The pieces are large, sliced well, clean and bright. The aroma is beautiful. Tossed some into a pot of braised lamb shanks the day they arrived - fabulous...
