Melissa's Tomatillo, (5 lb)

A small, hard fruit that looks like a large green cherry tomato beautifully hidden in a dry close-fitting Chinese lantern-looking husk. The sharp, tart, lemony flavor that is enhanced when roasted are a basic ingredient in Mexican and Southwestern cuisine. It's unique texture is an excellent base for salsas, gazpacho, and guacamole. These fruits make up the much celebrated green sauce "salsa verde". The Mexican green tomato, as they are commonly known, are generally used as a vegetable, and the fruit will ripen turning yellow or purplish. Simply peel off the husk and wash before using, or leave the husk on and garnish an appetizer tray to form a visually appealing dish.
